For most countries, rights granted to a permanent resident include but not limited to the following, the right to work, the right to apply for immediate relatives (wife/husband and children) to join them as residents in the country of their permanent residency. In some countries, permanent residents vote in local elections but do not vie for elected positions in the elections.

Though a permanent resident retains the rights to live indefinitely in that country, many countries impose some form of limits on the number of months a permanent resident can continuously live outside of the country if the permanent resident wishes to retain their status.
